More Than Just a Fair

Oregon Country Fair July 12-14

You’ve heard the saying “Keep Eugene Weird”. Well, the Oregon County Fair has enough “weird” for everyone.  Located in Veneta, Oregon (about 15 miles west of Eugene) the Oregon Country Fair is located in a wooded setting with their own water and communication systems, security team, recycling service, and much, much more. For the 3 days the fair is active, it is the 3rd largest city in Lane County. 45,000 people attend the event over the three days.

Celebrating 50 Years

This is the 50th year of the Oregon Country Fair. The first fair was held in Eugene over the weekend of November 1-2, 1969. The tag line for the event was “come in costume”.  Costumes still help define the culture and aesthetic of the fair today. The fair started as a craft fair to raise funds for the Children’s Community School. The event moved to Veneta for the fall fair in October 1970. The event has hosted concerts headlined by the Grateful Dead in 1972 and 1982. These concerts helped benefit the Springfield Creamery. In the early years of the fair (1969-1977), it was known as the Oregon Renaissance Faire. The fair still has a renaissance fair feel, in the way the fair is layed out and designed.

The Oregon Country Fair, in collaboration with Eugene BioSource, has arranged to power all of its diesel equipment with 100% Biodiesel, a renewable fuel derived from vegetable oil which burns cleaner than petroleum diesel.

In keeping with our policy of responsible land management through watershed enhancement our staff and volunteers have been working to enhance Indian Creek, which is a vital component of our landscape. This project has been funded by the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board.

Kid Friendly Areas

Kids Loop, across from New Kids Child Care on Wally’s Way, is an unsupervised play area with climbing structures and other facilities to keep the little people happy.

Child Care offers two special places just for kids with grown-ups. Mellow Space is located adjacent to the New Kids Child Care on Wally’s Way and Groover’s Grove is adjacent to Child Care on Sesame Street. These areas have diaper-changing tables and cushy places for breaks and naps. Adults must be accompanied by a child. No diapers are supplied and we ask that you take your used diapers with you.

The Void, near the Ritz Sauna offers a chill hangout space for teens. There are crafts, instruments and relaxing in this parent-free zone.
